Moscow Sheremetyevo Numbers Still Down 50% Amid Fuel Shortages & Ukraine Crisis

The Image Above: Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport airport movement statistics.

Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport's numbers are still down 50% compared to the same period in 2020.

With fuel shortages reported from the airport, this will no doubt continue to be a recurring theme in the wake of the Ukraine crisis.

For February 26-March 5, the airport recorded a +6.82% increase in traffic movements compared to the same period in 2021, but was down 52.89% for 2020.

The single-digit growth is a considerable reflection of the chaos that has emerged out of Moscow, with the West banning Russian aircraft from entering its airspace.

Fuel Shortages in Moscow

As reported by AviationSource, it is understood that Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport is suffering shortages of fuel for aircraft, according to reports.

Korean Air, which operates to Moscow, announced it would suspend services to the airport due to the fuel shortage, as quoted via Reuters:

“We were informed by a Russia-based refueling service provider this afternoon that we can no longer refuel our planes at the airport in Moscow".

It may appear in its early stages, but sanctions on Russia as a result of the Ukraine crisis may be working, especially if it is disrupting the delivery of Jet A1 into the country.

If aircraft cannot acquire fuel from providers, then we could see more flight cancellations as a result of the Ukraine crisis causing such shortages.
